frequently asked questions
Navigating senior living with confidence
Our frequently asked questions about contracts, care and costs to help you make the best decisions possible.
What makes Goodwin Senior Living Campuses different from other senior living communities?
In addition to a continuum of care and beautiful campuses, we are a not-for-profit organization with nearly 60 years of experience that brings heart to everything we do. From our passionate and dedicated team, to our diverse and welcoming culture, to our world-class health care services, we strive to be a place where you feel supported, inspired, connected and truly cared for.
What is the difference between a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) and a Life Plan Community (LPC)?
A Life Plan Community (LPC) and a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) are often confused for two separate community types, but there’s no difference. At Goodwin Living, we prefer the term “Life Plan Community,” though both terms indicate that the community offers a continuum of care.
What is a Rental Community?
Rental communities, like The View Alexandria and Forest Hills of D.C., offer a flexible way to enjoy the benefits of senior living without the commitment of an entrance fee. Much like renting a home, you pay a monthly fee based on the level of care you need today—giving you the freedom to choose what suits you now. It’s a great option for those looking to enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle and vibrant community living, with the ability to adjust as life changes. While costs may vary over time with changing health needs, rental communities can be a smart choice for those seeking short-term flexibility and a more gradual transition into senior living.
What types of contracts do you offer?
At our rental communities, the contracts available are limited to fee-for-service contracts. There is no entrance fee, though you will pay a modest community fee when you join the community, followed by monthly fees that are based on your apartment size and any care you receive in your apartment.
At our communities that offer Lifecare contracts, you can choose from a range of contracts, some of which are fee-for-service while others include an insurance-like option called “Lifecare”.
What is Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance?
Long-term care insurance helps cover the cost of care when you need support with everyday activities—like bathing, dressing or eating—due to aging, illness or disability. It’s designed to ease the financial burden of care over time. Coverage for care is determined by your insurance policy. Long-term care insurance may apply to your costs at one of our campuses, though we recommend you consult your policy and insurance expert for details.
What’s the difference between Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support and Nursing Care?
Independent Living offers maintenance-free living with a full range of amenities and services. Assisted Living provides additional support with daily tasks, while Memory Support is a type of assisted living designed specifically for individuals experiencing cognitive changes like Alzheimer’s or dementia—with a specialized team and environments. Nursing Care offers the highest level of care for those who need the most support, and it includes both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care.
How do I know when it’s time to consider a senior living campus?
It’s never too soon to consider moving to a senior living campus, though it can become too late. While it’s different for everyone, if maintaining your home feels overwhelming or you’re seeking more social connection, safety or access to care, it may be time to explore your options.
Will I lose my independence if I move into a senior living campus?
Quite the opposite. Residents often find more freedom—free from home maintenance and chores and surrounded by opportunities for engagement, wellness and connection. You’ll still live life on your terms, with support only when you need it.
What happens if my health needs change over time?
In a Goodwin Senior Living Campus, you have access to a continuum of care on one campus—which may include Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support and Nursing Care—so you have access to care when you need it in a place that is familiar surrounded by neighbors who have become friends.
What if I outlive my financial resources?
At Goodwin Living, our commitment is lifelong. Residents who exhaust their financial resources through no fault of their own may be eligible for continued support through the Goodwin Living Foundation.
Can couples move in together even if we have different care needs?
Yes. We understand that couples may need different levels of support. We work with families to find the right arrangement so couples can continue living together or nearby, while each receiving the care they need.
Can I bring my own furniture and decorate my apartment?
Absolutely. Your home should reflect you. In fact, most of our apartments are not furnished, so residents must bring their own belongings. And at Goodwin Living, you will have opportunities to personalize your own space.
Are your campuses pet friendly?
Yes. We welcome your pets according to our pet policy.
